Ask five Melbourne web designers what a website costs and you will get five numbers that are hard to compare, because they are quoting different things. One is quoting a template with your logo on it. Another is quoting a custom build with content, SEO groundwork and integrations. Both are called "a website".
This is what the tiers actually cost in Melbourne, what separates them, and how to tell which one your business genuinely needs.
A website is quoted once and lived with for years. The cost that matters is the total over that life, not the number on the original quote.
The short answer
A professional custom marketing website for a Melbourne small to mid-size business typically lands in the $3,000 to $7,000 range. Below that you are usually buying a template build or a very small page count. Above it you are paying for custom functionality, integrations, or a larger content and design scope. Freelance and agency hourly rates in this market commonly sit around $150 to $300.
What you are actually paying for
Design is the visible part and usually the smaller part. A quote covers some mix of the following, and the difference between a cheap quote and an expensive one is almost always which of these are missing.
- Strategy and structure. What pages exist, what each one is for, and what a visitor should do next. Skip this and you get an attractive site that does not convert.
- Design. Visual design and how it behaves across devices. Also the component system that keeps things consistent as you add pages later.
- Build. Turning the design into a working site, on Webflow, WordPress, Shopify or custom code.
- Content. The words. Frequently excluded from quotes and frequently the reason a project stalls for months.
- SEO groundwork. Page titles, headings, structured data, redirects from the old site, speed. Cheap to do during the build and expensive to retrofit.
- Tracking. Analytics, conversion events, Google Tag Manager. Without this you cannot tell whether the new site is better than the old one.
- Handover. Whether you can update it yourself afterwards, or have to pay someone every time a phone number changes.
The tiers, honestly
Template build
A pre-made theme, your branding, your content dropped in. Fast, and genuinely fine for a new business that needs to exist online this month. The limits show up later: the layout fights you when your offering grows, and the SEO foundations are whatever the theme author decided.
Custom marketing site
This is where most established Melbourne businesses land, in the $3,000 to $7,000 range. Designed around your actual services and your actual buyer, built on a platform you can maintain, with the SEO and tracking done properly at build time rather than bolted on. Our own website builds start from $4,995, excluding GST.
Ecommerce and custom functionality
Once you add a product catalogue, payment, inventory sync, customer accounts or an integration with the system you already run the business on, cost moves well past the marketing-site range. It is driven almost entirely by the number of integrations, not by page count.
The costs that do not appear in the quote
Three things reliably surprise people after the invoice.
Content. A lot of quotes assume you supply the words. If you have never written service pages before, this is the step that turns a six week project into a five month one. Ask explicitly whether copywriting is included.
Ongoing costs. Hosting, domain, platform subscription, plugins, SSL, and someone to apply updates. Modest individually and worth knowing upfront. Our care and maintenance starts from $299, excluding GST.
Redirects. If you are replacing an existing site and the URLs change, every old address needs to point somewhere sensible. Miss this and you can lose rankings you spent years building. It is a small job during the build and a painful one afterwards.
How to tell if a quote is honest
- It lists pages, not just a total.
- It says who writes the content.
- It names the platform and confirms you own the account.
- It includes redirects if you have an existing site.
- It says what happens after launch, and what that costs.
- It gives a realistic timeline with the dependency on your content clearly marked.
A quote missing three or more of these is not cheaper. It is less complete.
What a website is supposed to do
The point of the spend is not the design. It is that more of the people who arrive turn into enquiries, and that Google and AI search can read the site well enough to send people in the first place. Those two goals decide the structure, and a build that ignores them is decoration with a price tag.
We build on Webflow, WordPress and Shopify, with the SEO structure, schema and tracking set up during the build rather than after it, because that is when it is cheap. As an accredited Google Partner with over 14 years behind us, we have also cleaned up enough migrations to know what going without costs.
And because we run lean rather than as a full-team agency, the fee reflects the absence of overhead rather than the absence of work. No lock-in, 30 day terms.
